Joy In The House Of The Lord

What brings you joy? A joy that bubbles up spills over and leaves your world just right. Maybe it’s taking a walk in a garden, in the forest or along the river. For some of you, it’s when you’re out in the boat fishing. For those of you that are young adults, it’s playing video games or sports. Possibly, it is the sunrise, sunset, watching kids at play, spending time with a friend, or simply that first-morning cup of coffee. It’s the moments we feel like our authentic selves, and right there in the middle of this moment, we feel it – deep and steady as a heartbeat – joy.

But, have you noticed it doesn’t take much to steal our joy? Someone cuts us off while driving. The entire carton of milk is spilled all over your paperwork sitting on the kitchen counter. You receive a bad report from the doctor or a friend. I’ve even been in a prayer meeting when I’ve found myself becoming overwhelmed by the severity and amount of needs to bring before the Lord.

Today, we are learning a new song, “House Of The Lord,” written by Phil Wickham. This song reminds us that we worship a God who was, who is and who evermore will be. We sing to the God who heals, saves, and always makes a way. Yet, our God still opens prison doors, calms raging seas, and rolls stones away.

“There’s joy in the house of the Lord,
There’s joy in the house of the Lord today;
And we won’t be quiet, we shout out Your praise.”*

This morning, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:1-2). Lift your eyes above the circumstances of life and connect with the Prince of Peace, who gives you joy. Allow your heart to overflow with gratitude for His presence and provision.

I pray that this song will ring in our ears all week long so that nothing will steal our joy. No matter what life throws our way, let’s always rejoice in the Lord and be joyful in God our Savior (see Habakkuk 3:17-19). Spend time with Jesus. Trust Him. He is your strength and your shield. “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trust in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him (Psalm 28:8).
