Never Forget

“Never Forget” is a slogan synonymous with 9/11 and understandably so. We, as Americans, started the day of 9/11/01 with our regular routines, never expecting that our comfortable life was about to be turned upside down. For the past 20 years, at least once a year, we remember.

Did you know that the psalmist David coined this phrase during his time in history? In Psalm 103:2, David tells us to “Never Forget” what God does for us while we worship Him. Psalm 103:2, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits. How often can we take for granted God’s incredible grace and mercy toward us! It can sometimes be too easy to forget the extravagant gifts He gives us.

Moses understood this. In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses continually told the Israelites to remember the Lord their God, remember that God brought them out of slavery, and remember His covenant. The apostle Paul encouraged the church in Ephesus to remember that at one time, they were separate from Christ and strangers to the covenants of promise (Ephesians 2:10-12). NEVER FORGET the good things He does for us.

Psalm 103:3-5
Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

The gifts David lists are 1) forgiveness of sin (Colossians 1:13-14, 1 John 1:9); 2) recovery from sickness (Deuteronomy 32:39); 3) deliverance from death (Romans 6:23, 1 John 3:14); 4) abundant lovingkindness and mercy (Psalm 103:11-13); 5) food to sustain life (Matthew 6:25-34) and 6) renewed strength (Isaiah 40:31).

Like David, we need to continually remind ourselves to affectionately and gratefully declare God’s attributes and character! Like David, we need to continually thank God for the soundness of body, soundness of mind, sight, hearing, speech, appetite, and a host of other gifts! Let’s take time to begin our day reading Psalm 103 regularly. This way, we will NEVER FORGET!
