Our Blessed Hope

“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, To deliver their soul from death And to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in Him, Because we trust in His holy name. Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, According as we have hoped in You.” Psalm 33:18–22, NASB95)

C.S. Lewis once said, “Hope is a continual looking forward to the eternal world.”

There is a hymn that says, “Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” It is easy to become discouraged these days and lose hope. Hope is the confident expectation for the future and is only as secure as the object of hope. I can hope the weather will be nice, but it is the weather, who can tell for sure. I can hope someone will change, but my hope is based on another person’s resolve to change. Yet there is one person that I can put my hope in that will never let me down, and that is God, my father.

The psalmist writes that God is focused on those who have put their hope in Him. His Hessed love is what will keep the one who has put his trust in God for provision and protection. Believers live with a confident expectation that God will be our provider and protector during times of trial and tribulation. They hope that one day soon, God will deliver them from this world. The result of having this kind of hope in God is joy. Joy during difficulties and peace in the midst of chaos.

Meditate on the words of Paul in his letter to Titus, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,” (Titus 2:11–13, NASB95)

Don’t lose hope; keep looking up until you see Jesus, our blessed hope!
