Out Of Egypt

“So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”” (Matthew 2:14–15, NASB95)

There are times when God will send us away into Egypt for our own good, but Egypt is not our home. Herod was a demonically inspired leader that was out to destroy the work of God by killing Jesus, the child king. Herod would attempt to kill Jesus by ordering the death of all 2-year-old boys in Bethlehem because the wise men refused to report the location of the baby king. I struggle with this plan and why God would allow infanticide? Why would God send Jesus away and allow so many children to die? It seems to me the better option is to strike Herod down dead, save the children, and also save Jesus. Yet, God chose in His perfect wisdom to allow this kind of suffering to take place, revealing His faithfulness to His word. God’s covenant love provides hope during hard times because God is always faithful to His word.

God’s covenant love was first demonstrated to Israel when God delivered the nation from Egypt in the first exodus. Once again, God demonstrated that nothing could stop His covenant love as God hides Jesus in Egypt and later calls Him out in a second Exodus. Jesus knew hardship because He would experience adversity all His life, from His birth to His death. All along, Jesus remained focused on fulfilling the Father’s plan regardless of the hardship He encountered so man can have an eternal hope for salvation based on God’s covenant love.

God is faithful to keep you through hard times, and Jesus knows what you are feeling during days of adversity. Throughout Scripture, we find God providing hope and deliverance for His people whom He loves, and you are loved by God. Your ultimate deliverance out of Egypt is the day you say goodbye to this world and enter into the presence of God. Until then, you must trust in God’s sovereign plan and God’s guidance. Go where God tells you and trust that He will keep you because you are His child, and when God is ready, He will call you out of Egypt according to His plan and timing.
