Persistent In Prayer

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.” Luke 11:9-10.

Persistence. It’s the one thing I keep seeing throughout Scripture when it comes to prayer. In fact, in my searches of Scripture, I have never seen the Lord tell his people to stop praying. One way we see this is the consistent theme in the Old Testament and the New to pray.

In this passage in Luke, Jesus was prompted by the disciples to teach them to pray. His method was similar to what Matthew described in Chapter 7; only Luke shares some stories about persistence that drive home a truth. Keep asking. Keep Praying.

We get weary sometimes because we want what we want now. Our culture is bent on making everything instant gratification. We struggle because answers to prayers aren’t always instant. But the reminder here is to keep asking, keep praying.

I love this reminder. It’s ok to try and bug your Heavenly Father. In reality, He has been waiting for us to try and bug Him too much about something. (It’s never too much for God!) We tend to give up and stop praying when we don’t get an answer after praying twice about it…

The picture Christ paints in this passage is that of a little child with his pointing finger poking his father, saying, “Dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, daaaaaad.” Looking for the father to turn his attention to the son. That’s persistent in prayer. And here you have Christ saying that our Heavenly Father loves that!

This week my prayer is that all of us would keep asking, keep praying and that we would be persistent in prayer. I also pray that in doing so, we would see the Lord give an answer, that we would find because God revealed, and that the door would be opened because we kept knocking.

His word to us is to pray and keep praying. Will we bug him enough this week?
