Thanks Be To God For His Indescribable Gift

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15, NASB95)

“It is only with gratitude that life becomes rich!” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer

What if you could only receive one gift this Christmas? What would it be, and how would you react? Would one gift be enough, and would you be grateful? Perhaps you would be extremely grateful if that gift was “indescribable.” The word Paul used in this passage for gift is dorea meaning a gift given in generosity. The word indescribable means something is inexpressible and beyond words. What is God’s indescribable gift that we should be thankful for?

The indescribable gift begins with “The surpassing grace of God in you!” (2 Cor. 9:14). God’s free, unconditional generosity of sending His one and only Son into this world to die and pay the penalty for your sins is God’s grace gift to you. The indescribable gift of restoration and redemption that leads to our adoption as a child of God. Jesus is the indescribable gift of God given to man. The grace gift of Jesus has established the whole framework of the Christian life and restored fellowship with God. The words “thank you” don’t seem sufficient to express the gratitude of the believer, and yet that is often the best we can say. Yet, can we live our lives with a grateful heart? YES! It is with a grateful heart we can express our gratitude towards our benevolent Father in heaven.

What does your life say to God for His grace gift to you? You may say “thank you” with your lips, but what do your actions say? This Christmas, may we all reflect on the indescribable gift of Jesus with our lives, as well as our voices, to express our appreciation to God for giving us His only Son, Jesus.

Thanks be to God, and in His Service,
Pastor Cary
