The House of Many Rooms

When you think of big houses you might think of Bill Gates, Donald Trump or Richard Branson. You might even think bigger like Buckingham Palace with 775 rooms and 830,000 square feet of living space. Yet all of these are nothing compared to the dwelling place of God.

“In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)

Jesus was preparing to leave His disciple, but as He prepared them for His departure He declared His purpose for leaving. “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places … I go to prepare a place for you.” Some have translated this as “Mansions” which is an unfortunate translation and not accurate. It gives the idea that Jesus is some kind of construction worker building you a mansion in heaven for your eternal retirement. We like it because if fits our Western idea of prosperity, “the mansion on a hilltop with a view.”

The residence that Jesus is speaking of is in the dwelling place of God, Heaven, and we are given a place of dwelling within that place where God lives. Jesus wants us to be with Him, where He is and will be forever seated in Heaven. Why is it so hard to think of a dwelling place with God in Heaven? Man struggles to describe the indescribable using earthly terms that may lead us astray. So what is Jesus saying?

Jesus is saying that by going to the cross and the grave He is preparing your place as a redeemed child of God in the presence of God for all eternity. Why? He answers that question in the next vs. 3, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:3) Jesus went to the cross in order to make a way for you to enter into God’s presence and He promises to come again and receive you into that presence. Don’t miss the heart of Jesus, “that where I am, there you may be also.” Jesus wants you with Him for all eternity; do you want what Jesus wants? Because yes, there is room for you in Heaven! Will you accept His invitation and enter in?
